3 Golden Metrics: Easy Guide to RSRP, SINR & RF Tuning

In mobile communication (4G LTE and 5G), Radio Frequency (RF) Optimization is the process of adjusting network settings to ensure the best possible coverage and quality for users. The two main metrics RF engineers measure are RSRP and SINR.

RSRP (Reference Signal Received Power) measures the absolute strength of the signal received by a mobile device from a base station. It is measured in dBm (decibel-milliwatts). A value close to -70 dBm is considered excellent, while anything below -110 dBm usually results in poor connectivity or dropped calls.

SINR (Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio) measures the quality of the signal. It compares the strength of the desired signal to the background noise and interference from other cells. SINR is measured in dB. Even if RSRP is strong, a low SINR (below 0 dB) will cause slow data speeds because of high packet loss and interference.

To optimize these metrics, RF engineers perform 'physical tuning' (changing antenna angles) or 'parameter tuning' (adjusting transmission power and frequencies) to ensure users have high RSRP and SINR values.
