3 Big Advantages of 5G Massive MIMO & Beamforming

In traditional 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, base station antennas broadcast signals in wide sectors (typically 120 degrees). This means RF energy is wasted in areas where there are no users, and it causes interference to neighboring cells.

5G introduces Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and Beamforming to solve this. Massive MIMO uses arrays of dozens of tiny antenna elements (e.g., 64T64R—64 transmitters and 64 receivers) in a single active antenna unit (AAU).

Beamforming is the signal processing technology that directs these radio waves into narrow, concentrated beams focused directly toward active users. As a user moves, the beam dynamically tracks their location. This increases signal strength (RSRP), reduces interference (SINR is improved), and allows multiple users to share the same frequency resources simultaneously, drastically boosting network capacity.
