At its core, 5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology. While 2G was for calls, 3G for basic web, and 4G for mobile broadband, 5G is designed to connect almost everyone and everything together—including machines, objects, and devices.
How is it faster? 5G achieves higher speeds by using new, wider radio frequencies. Think of 4G as a single-lane road, and 5G as a 10-lane highway. This includes 'mid-band' and high-frequency 'millimeter waves' (mmWave) which can transmit gigabits of data per second.
Another key feature is ultra-low latency. Latency is the response time (the delay before data transfer begins). While 4G latency is about 30-50 milliseconds, 5G can drop this to under 5 milliseconds. This is critical for real-time applications like autonomous driving, remote surgery, and cloud gaming.
Lastly, 5G supports massive density. In a crowded stadium, 4G often gets congested because it can only support about 100,000 devices per square kilometer. 5G can connect up to 1 million devices in the same area, paving the way for the Internet of Things (IoT).
